How Self-Service Mode Works

Self-service mode is a stripped-down version of the application.  When the application starts, it prompts the user to sign-in. This can be done by signing in with a number or swiping a card. A message on this screen will prompt the user how to sign in. Once the user signs in, they will be brought to a page where they can select the items they want to order. Once they are done selecting the items, they will press the Finish button. This will send the order to the kitchen and do a quick split and close or create a new order. In most cases, a quick split and close would be the appropriate choice. However, in cases where the customer is ordering the food and paying at a different point of sale terminal create new order would be the appropriate choice. Currently, Credit Card (just the integrated Axia one) is the only other form of payment that should be configured to be accepted. There are also buttons for Start Over and Admin. The Start Over button cancels the current order and creates a new one. The Admin button allows staff to access more functions of the touchscreen, typical of a restaurant set-up although stripped down.

How to Set Up Self-Service Mode

  • Create a department that will be used for self-service.
    • Touchscreen (TS) Mode – Self-Service
    • Enable Other Forms of Payment should be set to “Yes” if Credit Card (just the integrated Axia one) are to be accepted.  Otherwise, it should be set to “No”.
    • User Message (Self-Service) – This is the message the customer will see to tell them how to sign-in. Example: Please Scan your employee card. If you do not have your card, please speak with a dining employee for help.
    • I Don’t Know ID Message (Self-Service) – This is the message that the customer will see when they click on the message that they don’t know their id. Example:  Please speak with a dining employee for help.
    • Staff Sign-In Button (Self-Service) – This is the label for the button that users will use to get to additional sign-in options. Example: Admin Login
    • Order Notes Message (Self-Service) – An optional message that can appear on the order notes page if order notes are being prompted. Example: Please enter your pick up time and then hit OK.  Otherwise, hit cancel to proceed.
    • Ask Customer for Special Requests (Self-Service) – Allow an additional prompt to ask the customer for 'Special Requests' when adding items to the cart.
    • Self-Service Touch to Continue (Self-Service) – If configured to Yes, a screen with the label “Touch to Continue” will be the starting point for customers.  Otherwise, the “Identify User” dialog will be the starting point.
    • Self-Service Start Screen Image (Self-Service) – If an image is uploaded, it will be displayed as a background image behind the “Identify User” dialog and will also be displayed as the “Touch to Continue” screen image if Touch to Continue is enabled. Note: When displaying the image, the application will stretch/adjust its size to fill the entire display.  For best results, the image’s dimensions and resolution should be appropriate for the display(s) upon which it will be displayed.
    • Self-Service enabled Gift Card Keypad (Self-Service) - Shows a keypad for customers to manually type in their gift card identification number.
    • Show Item Price (Self-Service) – Displays the pre-tax amount the item will cost given the customer's customer-type that is signed into Self-Service (similar to Online Ordering).
    • Show Item Menu Text (Self-Service) – Allows the 'Menu Text' found under the 'Printed Menu/Self Ordering Settings' in item management to be displayed on the Button itself (similar to Online Ordering).
    • Size of Menu Item Buttons (Self-Service) – Change the size of the buttons displayed for Menus, Sub-menus and Menu Items on the Touch Screen Application in Self-Service mode. There are 2 allowed options (Normal, Large). To use Item Price or Menu Text features for Menu Item buttons this setting must be set to 'Large'.
    • Low Item Countdown Behavior (Self-Service) - Controls if the customer can add a item to their order if the item is configured to use item countdown. This will allow the system to block the user when the current item countdown value is less than the warning amount. This will also allow items with a current countdown amount to be hidden from the menu after the item reaches a lesser amount than the warning amount.
    • No Item Countdown Behavior (Self-Service) - Controls if the customer can add a item to their order if the item is configured to use item countdown. This will allow the system to block the user when the current item countdown value is 0. This will also allow items with a current countdown amount to be hidden from the menu after the item reaches 0.
    • Department Customer Types Table (Self-Service)- Controls what Customer Types are allowed to use the department in Self-Service mode. Must have at least one row configured in Self-Service and can not have duplicate Customer Types configured for a given Department.
  • Link any menus to the department per normal set-up.
  • Confirm all customers who will be using the department have swipe card ids. The swipe card id field is the one used to identify the customer.
  • Mode Set-Up
    • New Order Dine-In/Out – "Dine-In Only" or "Dine-Out Only" with only Dine-Out 1 Screen and Requisition Desc populated
    • Restaurant Mode Sign In Action - Start New Order Always

    • Close Order Button Action – Quick Split and Close
    • Auto Action From Send Order – Quick Split and Close
    • Default Customer - This can be used to display a Continue as Guest button. This should be used in situations where a user would not be able to be identified up front. Please note that this will cause the order to be assigned to a default customer who may or may not be the customer the check should be closed to.
    • Use Existing Drawer Balance – Always Use Existing
    • Starting Balance Report – No
    • Open Cash Drawer – Other Forms of Payment Only
    • Auto Create Drawer Balance – Yes
    • Blind Close Cash Drawer - No
    • TouchScreen (TS) Mode - Empty
  • User/Role Set-Up
    • Create role for self-service. This role will be assigned to the user that will be used for terminal login. The user may have all functions, except Check-In Administration, Administration, and Search Manual Check-In. This keeps customers from being able to access the Admin button on the touchscreen or to manually search customers through the UI.
    • If community is utilizing other forms of payment, make sure that the terminal user has the appropriate functions to start a cash drawer balance.
    • Create user to sign into the terminal with who has the self-service role.
