How to Use Magic Wand Manually for Support Teams

Objectives


Update devices to latest OS remotely.

Prerequisites


1. Remote connection to device.

2. Remove all USB storage devices. Peripheral devices (barcode scanner, RFID Reader etc. are fine).

3. Device name - the device name can usually be derived with the command:

# grep GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR /etc/default/grub

 

 

 

Instructions


1. Set OS Updates and Force OS Update in Device Management to "Yes."

2. Copy and paste this command and press Enter: 

# curl -fL --user posapphotfix:@11ianc3 https://updates.fullcount.net/osupdater/support_installer/support_updater.sh -o support_updater.sh && bash support_updater.sh

3. If a list appears, select the correct device from the list and press Enter. If the device has only one product model (eg M3W), it will auto-select this for you on start. The script will check and argue if it thinks the choice was incorrect, but it cannot determine which device it is if they share product models like the 3M, Cyprus, or eGalax terminals from Pioneer do.

4. After it successfully completes, type the command:

# systemctl restart fullcount-checkforupdates (this step can take a long time depending on network speed).

Press Enter and wait 7-10 minutes for the update to download and install per terminal and it can be ran in parallel on other terminals. 

5. Optional: If you want to watch it download the squashfs and install to make sure things are running, you can type

# journalctl -f

 

Notes:

*** If ANYTHING fails during this, or it's taking too long, do NOT run it again and speak with a Systems Team member for intervention. ***

1.  You will lose your remote connection when the device reboots so it may be beneficial to have another connection at the site to hop from when this happens.

2.  The script will check to make sure OS Updates and Force OS Update is set to yes and exit if not with a warning message.

3.  The script includes a check for USB storage that will hopefully pick up if one is attached, and exit with a warning message.

4.  There are 2 versions of the installer script, but each script determines if the correct one was downloaded and if not, will download and execute the correct one so only one command is necessary.

5.  The script will copy over static IP information to the new OS.

6.  OS images 6.0.0 through 6.2.0 will reboot once and then continue with update, the script will do this automatically.

7.  6.0.X devices must first update to 7.5.0 as an intermediate OS. If a future version is released like 8.0.0, 6.0.X devices will update first to 7.5.0, then to 8.0.0 automatically. 6.1.0 and 6.2.0 devices will update to 8.0.0 without this step.

8.  You may have to set the correct boot entry in the BIOS after install. If the terminal is repeatedly booting into the old version (especially with 6.0.X), go into the BIOS and select the correct boot device. This will typically start with "UEFI" if it's a Cyprus terminal. 3M terminals are BIOS only.

9.  If the timezone is off after updating and breaking autologin, fix it with

# yast timezone
